"Interior design is a conversation... it only works if all voices are active & flexibility is understood."

The Compelling Value of Interior Design.
Interior design is powerful – and just as important for a commercial space as it is for your residence. The multidimensional and complex value of interior design is often hidden and unnoticed by nature. The value of a space can be analyzed by how well the space functions for whom it is designed and what emotions are provoked from said space. Interior layouts, products, and materials have an impact on people’s wellness, productivity, health, education, estate value, etc.
The Value of Interior Design to YOU- The Designer.
It is important to remember that interior spaces shape your behaviors, feelings, and perceptions just as they will for your future clients. As an interior designer, you have a significant impact on the sustainability of daily life. Being an interior designer allows you the power to control the design of your interiors based on the choices you make, the specifications you make, and the products you choose to buy. Interior design serves as a creative outlet that is filled with a multitude of unique problem solving opportunities and challenges. It is important to be open minded and think outside of the box as a designer so that you are able to properly accommodate the challenges that you are going to face on the job. Interior design is a very fulfilling career that people often pursue because of their desire to help others, wish to reshape the physical environment, desire to have a flexible career, and the variety of opportunities in both residential and commercial areas that can be achieved.
The Value of Interior Design to the Public.
Understanding the personal value of interior design to the public along with how to best meet human needs through effective design helps shape who you are as a designer. All interior places influence people at the individual level, causing them to have personal value. Being deliberate and conscious when making design decisions not only meets peoples needs and desires, but also validates their worth as individuals and their perceived value to society. Meeting and understanding human needs is an incredibly important role of an interior designer. Some example of such needs include territoriality, privacy, need for nature, and the desire for well designed spaces.
Business and Economic Value of Interior Design.
The value of interior design expands into all business sectors and is an economic advantage to clients. The business and economic value of interior design relates to its ability to attract customers. A well designed business space results in more customers, increased employee satisfaction, and higher productivity. From a local value, bad design has real economic consequences and can be a direct impact on the financial bottom line of businesses. In contrary, professional interior designers can actually save their clients time and money while while increasing efficiency and productivity in the workplace. At the national level, the economy directly impacts the interior design profession. When the national economy is up, salaries, profits, and the demand for interior design services are up as well. Although the use of interior designers for residential projects links to economic conditions, commercial projects often occur regardless of economic conditions. An example of these commercial projects would be the building of schools because these projects happen over a period of years. The value of interior design is globally needed, yet universally misunderstood. Its perceived value varies in different parts of the world. Gensler is a great example of a world-renown architecture and planning firm that increases the global value of interior design.
Societal Value of Interior Design.
From a cultural and societal view, interior spaces are simply vessels for materials and artifacts that communicate items of cultural value in an unspoken language. The objects and belongings that you surround yourself with reflect who you are and who you wish to become. It is important for public and personal spaces to reflect the cultures of those who live and use the spaces. Socially responsible designs are significant in that they address social, environmental, and economic issues. Socially responsible design communicates the perception that designers have a responsibility to effect real change in the world through better design for all people.
Get Inspired!
Below, I shared some images from a Children's Hospital I discovered that is located in Samut Sakhon, Thailand. I am truly blown away and incredibly inspired by the design choices that were made in this facility. The website has a fantastic explanation and breakdown of why these architectural decisions were made and how they positively impact the patients that use this facility. Journalist Hana Abdel states that, "For the kids, luxury isn’t something that can comfort them from the pain, fear for needles or even the bitterness of the medicine. We, therefore, look for the things that will bring them happiness throughout their experience at the hospital. With the children’s mindset, we discover that ‘fun’ is what every child instinctively looks for. Despite their different backgrounds, all kids want to live their lives looking for something fun to do."
The space is created using various physical shapes, colors and symbols. This design brings a sense of freedom to the young users’ experience of the space. The playful lines are formed into the arches constructed above the doorways and seating areas with the sizes calculated to correspond with children’s body proportion, creating a built environment that truly accommodates children’s behaviors and preferences. The pastel color tone encourages the children’s use of imagination. The children will be able to enjoy the spaces inside of the hospital according to their own personal imagination and individually develop an experience through their interactions with the curated spatial program.
